Here we go with part five and 2nd section of our branding series. If you are really serious about branding your name or your shop you will need to buy a domain name. More on that in a minute. If your shop name is something like Linda’s bead shop, someone may already have that domain name and really is not a very memorable shop name. Etsy will let you rename your shop at this time, think of something unique that you feel comfortable with and may also explain what you are all about. Like my friend Bobbi, her shop name is FatDog beads. Very memorable and her logo is really cute. Another Etsy friend, Sam of Hoolala Jewellery has a shop name that is fun and easy to remember. When I choose my name I was thinking of sitting in my little cottage making jewelry or crafts, however I found after I began to brand my shop name it came up a in google searches for “building” cottages and designing homes, gulp a little too late I had purchased my domain, found a hosting company and set up a blog. My point is to be very thoughtful about your brand name.
Do some searches in Google, Bing, Yahoo, MSN and Etsy for the shop name you currently use and the one you might like to have. Did you find someone already had your name? Not to worry you may be able to buy a version of that name. Janedoecrafts2012 or think of something that is catchy or identifies your product. Something short is better, long names tend to confuse the searcher.
Domains. There are several companies that sell domains by that I mean they in essence copyright your name for the internet, once you purchase your domain no one else can have the same name. They can buy versions of the name but if you buy it you own it for a period of time. I have used GoDaddy for many years. If you click on the link you can get discount prices through my blog site. So now you have your name set and decided to buy a domain for Jane Doe Crafts. Your domain will now be www.janedoecrafts.com(not a real domain)
Here is a great article that explains how to set your domain up on blogger through Go Daddy. https://plus.google.com/u/0/110587955497525318489/posts/Kq4PN7aYqYS
If you are internet savvy you may choose your own hosting company which I advise if you are going to be full time into blogging. I have my domain with Go Daddy, my blog with WordPress.org and my domain is hosted by Hostgator. You will see ads on my blog for discounts on hosting through my blog. I will actually get credit if you buy through my blog. That is called affiliate marketing, and I will talk more about that on another post on blogging for money.
So if you are ready, buy your domain and set up your blog. More next post.
