I love this weeks theme.  Fall is my favorite season.

Under The Maple

The inspiration for these pumpkin and acorn earrings came from the bountiful scattering of acorns everywhere on the college campus where I work. If I could draw or paint it would be to capture all the variations of gold, red, brown and pale greens of the season.

The Great Pumpkin Little Acorn

Harvest brings to mind the days past of harvesting the winter corn, stripping tobacco and carving pumpkins.  I am pretty much a city girl these days but I love to collect a few walnuts, break off the husk and store them to dry for Christmas cookies. Childhood scents remembered; the dank sweet smell of leaves as I jumped and rolled in the newly raked  piles of leaves. I think of moment frozen in time;  my Mom and the other ladies from the church stirring large cauldrons of cinnamon spiced apple butter, the backdrop of the brilliant blue sky framing the giant oaks and maples. It was in the late Fifties and early Sixties; I can still see the ladies stirring the cauldrons with large wooden paddles. Multi colored gingham aprons wrapped over their dresses, fanning the smoke and heat away from their faces as the wind blew around the wood fires.  Talking and chatting as us kids played tag in the churchyard.

  1. These are sooooo cute! They make me think of my mother. She worked as a highschool cafeterea casheer and always wore great funky earings. Everyone in school loved her.

  2. I remember my Grandmother making apple butter and cider, but she did it in our kitchen and never with anyone else. The smells were always divine. I love these earrings. Big pumpkin paired with little acorns are perfect for this challenge.
